Choosing the Right Window Style for Your Home

September 16, 2021

A lot of people forget to take their windows into account when doing home remodels. However, picking a nice home window style can make all the difference in the world. It’s important to not only find a window that functions well, but also one that matches your home’s style. This can sometimes be difficult, as there are many different window styles available these days. Read on to learn about several different window styles and the types of homes they work best with.

Awning windows

These types of windows open from the bottom and resemble an awning when opened. They are great for when you want to open the window during a rainstorm, as the water will slide off instead of blowing directly into your home. Awning windows are often available in a variety of sizes and look great on both traditional- and modern-style homes. They are also often called “hopper” windows.

Double-hung windows

Double-hung windows are the type of windows you’ll find on most American homes. They are easy to use and look great on most types of homes. Double-hung windows are made with a top and bottom sash, both of which can slide up and down. These windows are commonly found on traditional homes, though they also look great on Colonial Revival-style homes.

Single-hung windows

Also very popular in the United States, single-hung windows are a lot like double-hung in that they feature two sashes. On single-hung windows, however, only the lower sash can move up and down. These are also easy to use and can look great on almost any home with the right paint job.

Casement windows

Not quite as common as double-hung windows, casement windows open outward like a door. You can usually operate these by hand or with a crank. While these windows look great and allow for good airflow, they aren’t the best to keep open when it’s raining. They work well with many different home styles, including contemporary, prairie, ranch and mid-century modern.

Fixed windows

Unlike most other types, fixed windows don’t open and close. That’s why you’ll often find these types of windows in inaccessible areas, like architectural accents. These windows let in plenty of light and are great when it comes to increasing a home’s energy efficiency. Fixed windows are also usually less expensive than other types of windows.

Slider windows

Another common type, slider windows are much similar to double-hung windows as they feature two sashes. On slider windows, however, the sashes slide from side to side instead of up and down. With slider windows, at least half of the window is covered at all times. These look great on both contemporary and ranch-style homes. While they’re easy to maintain, the tracks on slider windows do require some regular cleaning.
